Plastic welding with an insert heating rod

What is it?

Heating welding rod is a flexible thermoplastic rod with a diameter of approx. 3/16" (4,7 mm).
This innovative system uses super fine electrical resistance wires wounded inside of a polyethylene or polypropylene welding rod to melt up the plastic.

Advantages

You can weld within a short period of time.
You can shape this rod almost into any shape.
Fuse thin sheet, thick plate, or any molded part from 1" to 60 ft. (20 mm - 20 m).
The heating rod becomes an integral part of the weld. The super fine wires remaining in the weld area have no negative effect on the strength or longevity of the weld.

How does it work?

At the ends of the heating rod, voltage is applied. Measure the rod and remove the plastic off the ends. We recommend a tin bath or the Stripping-Tool, in which the rod ends are inserted.
Quickly pull off  the molten plastic with an electric insulation plier.
Crimp the metal wires now with ferrules that don´t have plastic.

Place the wire by spot welding (e.g. with the Drader Injectiweld) or by welding with a hot air gun.
You can also insert the rod into a designated slot.

The voltage that is used depends on the length and current strength.
The temperature is controlled by the current strength.
It will require 6 - 8 Amps in order to melt the rod.
The longer the weld, the higher the voltage must be chosen.
To weld one meter heating welding rod it requires approx. 25 V at 8 Amps.

It takes about a minute until the heating welding rod is hot enough and plasticized until the welding begins. After removing the power, the parts must be pushed together.

Finishing process

The ends which are sticking out can be cutted off. You will get a nice finish, when your drill this area open and weld it e.g. with the Drader Injectiweld.
