PP-flex / Flex

Soft welding rod for PP and PE

Application

Flex or PP-flex is a special thermoplastic with a very high softness and high flexibility.

The feel is similar to that of a soft-touch rubber surface. Flex has a low Shore hardness of less than 80 A.

Flex welding rod welds particularly well to PP, but also holds on PE. This way you can make elastic elements.

Flex is very soft and elastic.

Connect parts with Flex and get a movable connection.

Processing PP-flex / Flex

Flex is our softest welding rod. The low Shore hardness makes the feel similar to rubber.

You can use all standard welding equipment. A hot air tool, an injectiweld or extruder.

Flex is easy to post-process. It can be sanded, cut and sawn.

Thermoplastic elastomer

Application

Thermoplastic elastomers are soft materials that have similar properties to rubber.

TPE can be formed and welded by applying heat.

Handles and household utensils as well as parts of consumer electronics are made of TPE and have a soft-touch surface.

In the automotive industry, TPE is used for insert mats, for the coating of control elements, trim parts, seals, spoiler lips and mud flaps.

TPEs have a useful temperature of -50 to 120 °C and have good resistance to chemicals, oils and alkalis.

Application

Polyvinyl chloride is an amorphous thermoplastic. PVC is flame retardant and has very good UV and weather resistance.

The mechanical high strength, rigidity and hardness are characteristic of rigid PVC (PVC-U). Window profiles and handrails are made of PVC. PVC has proven its worth in tank and apparatus construction.

At temperatures up to ~60 °C, PVC is resistant to water, aqueous solutions, alkalis, to greases and oils, ethanol and gasoline.

Parts made of PVC can be very well post-processed by sawing, drilling, grinding and cutting. Threads also hold very well due to the high strength.

Poly-vinyl chloride is a very hard and resilient material.

Window frames and plastic pipes are made of PVC for weather resistance.

Processing PVC

PVC is a hydrophilic material. We recommend tempering the welding rod before processing for this reason.

You can use welding equipment suitable for PVC. A hot air tool or an extruder.

PVC is easy to post-process. It can be grinded, sawn and machined.

PVC must not be heated to high temperatures, as this can produce gases that are hazardous to health.

Polystyrene

Application

Polystyrene is an amorphous thermoplastic. The normal PS is hard, rigid and sensitive to impact.
Our welding rod is made of Hi-PS. The high-impact variant of polystyrene has better impact strength.

Polystyrene is used in electrical engineering because of its good electrical resistance values.

PS is resistant to moisture, salt solutions, and weak alkalis and acids. This plastic is not resistant to non-polar solvents. Polystyrene is sensitive to UV radiation and becomes brittle quite quickly when exposed to light.

In 3D printing, HiPS can be processed very similarly to ABS. HiPS is used as a support material for 3D objects made of ABS, because the polystyrene can be dissolved and removed with limonene.

Application

PP-EPDM consists mostly of polypropylene and part of a softer elastomer.

Parts made of PP-EPDM are more flexible than those made of pure PP. For this reason, bumpers or wheel arches on cars are preferably made from this plastic.

PP-EPDM is chemically resistant to many acids, alkalis, oils and greases.

PP-EPDM can be welded reliably. For parts from the car you use a welding iron otherwise a hot air tool, an Injectiweld or an Extruder.

PP-EPDM is used to make bumpers and wheel arches on cars.

PP-EPDM is softer and more flexible than pure PP.

Processing PP-EPDM

PP-EPDM is a non-polar material. For this reason, we recommend abrading the surface in the joining area.

You can use all standard welding equipment. A hot air tool, an injectiweld or extruder.

PP-EPDM can be easily post-processed. It can be drilled, sawn, machined and varnished.

Polypropylene

Application

Polypropylene is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic. PP is harder and more heat resistant than PE. Polypropylene is the second most widely used plastic in the world. Packaging and industrial goods are made of this material.

Compared to PE, PP has better mechanical properties and a higher thermal resistance. Foil hinges can be made from PP. PP is resistant up to a temperature of ~110°C.

Polypropylene has good resistance to chemicals. It is resistant to grease, many solvents, acids and alkalis, and alcohol. PP hardly absorbs any water. Gases diffuse through PP.

Polypropylene does not bond or print well without pretreatment. We weld to join parts made of PP.

Polypropylene can be post-processed very well by drilling, grinding, sawing and machining.

There are three types of Polypropylene: the homopolymer has particularly good stiffness, the copolymer has high impact strength, and the random copolymer has high transparency.

Polyethylene

Application

Polyethylene is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic. PE is the most commonly used plastic in the world. Packaging, household items, bottles, transport boxes, garden furniture and many common items are made of this material.

Polyethylene has high ductility and impact resistance. The hardness and bending stiffness are higher in other plastics. PE is heat resistant up to a temperature of ~80°C.

The biggest advantage of PE is a high chemical resistance to acids, alkalis, oils and greases. Polyethylene also hardly absorbs water. Gases and water vapors can diffuse.

Polyethylene is a non-polar material. For this reason, PE cannot be glued or printed without pretreatment. Welding is used to join parts made of PE.

Polyethylene is very easy to finish by drilling, grinding, sawing and machining.

Depending on the density of the plastic, the abbreviation PE is followed by letters. PE-HD is the most common type and is used for plastic sheets, pipes and other semi-finished products with high density in the extrusion process. PE-LD and PE-LLD has a lower density than PE-HD. Films and rotationally molded parts are made from these grades.

Polycarbonate

Application

Polycarbonate is an amorphous thermoplastic. This plastic has a high transparency.

Polycarbonate has a high thermal resistance.

In addition to the high flexural strength and impact strength, the high strength and hardness are good technical properties of this material.

Polycarbonate is resistant to aqueous solutions and to many oils and greases. Polycarbonate is not resistant to alcohols and solvents. PC is also a hydrolysis-sensitive polyester. Long exposure to hot water can cause stress cracking. This plastic does not have a scratch-resistant surface.

Polycarbonate is resistant to ignition, the flame usually extinguishes after the source of ignition is removed.

We know polycarbonate from optical data mediums (CD, Blu-Ray), clear containers and from transparent plastic sheets (visual protection), protective eyewear and lenses.

Polycarbonate processes well in 3D printing and has the highest strength of all transparent 3D materials. Alternative 3D materials are only PET and BendLay.

Polyamide

Application

Polyamide is a semi-crystalline polymer commonly referred to as Nylon.

Polyamide has extremely high strength and toughness. To tear or break this material is very difficult. Items that have to withstand high mechanical stress are often made of Polyamide. Polyamide also has good resistance to heat.

The abbreviated designation PA is supplemented by a number. This provides information about the number of carbon atoms. Commonly used are PA-6 and PA-12. PA-12 has only one tenth of the water absorption of PA-6. In principle, polyamides must be very well dried for processing.

The high impact strength, high notched impact strength and good sliding properties are the greatest advantages of Polyamide. Moisture absorption makes the application challenging.

We know polyamide from products such as cable ties or from the bristles of a toothbrush. Ropes, plastic screws, gears, parts from the engine interior (often fiber-reinforced) and fuel tanks and lines. Stable threads can be cut into parts made of polyamide. Polyamides are oil-resistant.

High-strength objects result in 3D printing, making nylon an exciting 3D filament.

Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate Copolymerizate

Application

Acrylonitrile-Styrene-Acrylate is an amorphous copolymer consisting of the three components Acrylonitrile, Styrene and Acrylic acid ester.

This engineering plastic has similar properties to ABS. The weather resistance and UV resistance is better with ASA. For this reason, parts made of ASA are more suitable for outdoor use.

ASA is a hard material with very good technical properties. The material is very impact resistant and scratch resistant. The surface is more glossy than ABS.

ASA is very suitable for varnishing and coating. It can be well post-processed by sanding, sawing and drilling.

Chemical resistance to oils and greases, alcohol and weak acids also make this plastic interesting for many applications.

ASA plastic is often used for parts that are thermally stressed or exposed to the weather. So we find ASA in electrical appliances such as a coffee maker or a microwave, in articles from the sports and recreational sector and especially often in parts of automobiles.

ASA is a very proven material for 3D printing as a 3D filament.
